Liverpool have secured their place at the top of the Premier League table after defeating Tottenham Hotspur in a thrilling encounter at Anfield on Sunday.
The Reds came into the match as clear favourites, having won their last three games and boasting a 100% record against Spurs this season. However, it was the visitors who started off strongly, with Harry Kane hitting the woodwork early on before Dele Alli also had a shot blocked by Alisson Becker.
However, Liverpool refused to be denied and they took the lead through Sadio Mane in the 25th minute. The Senegalese forward showed great composure to slot home from close range following a corner from Virgil van Dijk.
Tottenham were then reduced to ten men when Lucas Moura was sent off for a second bookable offence on the half-hour mark. Despite this setback, Spurs remained dangerous and were created plenty of chances in the opening stages of the second half.
But it was Liverpool who eventually sealed victory when Roberto Firmino set up Mohamed Salah in the 64th minute. The Egyptian hit a powerful drive into the bottom left-hand corner of the net to secure all three points for his side.
With the win, Liverpool moved to the summit of the Premier League table with 28 points from seven games. They are now just two points behind leaders Manchester City and eight clear of third-placed Chelsea.
The result was a perfect start to what could be a historic season for Jurgen Klopp's side. They will hope to continue their winning ways as they face West Bromwich Albion next week.
